Is It Safe?

Is it Safe?

There it is again: the hundredth time I’ve heard it; the question that doesn’t really have an answer. “What do you want me to say? Yes, it is. No, it isn’t.”

At times my temperament wants to put the questioner on the spot: “Does it need to be?” “Is what safe?” “It’s as safe as your city.” “No it’s not safe; does it matter?”

David and Paul don’t agree on this safety issue. David includes a prayer for safety in most of his Psalms. Paul, on the other hand, who was continually in harm’s way, never mentions it. Instead: “Lord, let your servants speak with boldness.”

Danger doesn’t always come from the ‘front line.” I’ve told my friends, if you hear that I’m dead, it will be from a car accident, not a bullet or a bomb.

So, tell me what you think.
> Should missionaries take risks?
> Should they evacuate dangerous areas?
> Should they take the low-risk approach, like some military strategists, and “bomb” the place with radio, literature, etc.?”
> How about a guarantee of safety from the host country?
> Maybe those who regularly kill God’s messengers don’t deserve to hear the Gospel?!
